One of the biggest decisions to make when deciding on a cabinet or vanity is the kind of countertop. There are so many choices, that it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Here’s a handy guide to choosing the countertop that’s perfect for your kitchen or bath.
MATERIAL – Here are some of the most popular types of countertops:
Solid surface. Most people know this by the brand name, which is Corian. There are other brand names, of course. Solid surface countertops cost about 20% more than granite. They’re maintenance free, but are vulnerable to scratches and burns. We have a local company that we highly recommend for the solid surface.
Granite. This popular surface is durable, and holds up well to almost anything you can dish out. It does have to be sealed periodically to keep its beauty. We keep several colors and sizes of granite countertops in stock. You can see these in our inspiring store displays, and see how nicely they complement our all wood vanities.
Cultured Marble. A great compromise between granite and solid surface, cultured marble is low maintenance and very durable. It’s used only for bathrooms. It’s made by mixing a powder and water – almost like a cake batter. As the product swirls, colors are added, giving a marble look. We have a local company that we order cultured marble from. Their countertops are solid, not filled with foam or hollowed out to reduce the shipping weight. Each cultured marble top that we sell is custom made.
Post Form. The most economical of the choices we offer is the post form countertop, which you probably call “Formica”. Our post form countertops are made by Formica and Wilsonart, which offers you a very wide selection of colors, finishes, and profile edges…
COLOR Your color choices depend on the material used for your countertop. We have samples for you to look at, including over 200 colors for post form!
FINISH If you choose a post form countertop, you’ll need to choose a finish. Ask us to show you the difference between matte, high gloss, and high definition.
Don’t be overwhelmed by all the choices. Our staff has lots of experience with kitchens; some of our guys regularly install kitchens, so they can give you really good advice. We send you direct so you can get the best price.
